HAY FACTS AND STATISTICS
At the Ranch, hay is not just a staple in our horses’ diets; it is a crucial investment in their health and happiness. Our herd consumes approximately 11,000 pounds of hay each week, demonstrating our commitment to their well-being. This commitment translates to an annual investment of over $50,000.
During the cold winter months, hay serves as a crucial source of warmth for our equine friends. It’s essential to maintain a “steady diet” of hay, as horses thrive when they have access to it 24/7 when they’re not working. Unlike ruminant animals like cows, goats, and deer, horses are non-ruminant, simple-stomached herbivores that primarily feast on plant material. Their digestive systems are finely tuned for frequent, small meals, similar to the natural grazing patterns they would follow in the wild. When their grazing opportunities are restricted, it can lead to serious digestive problems—so we aim to keep them munching away as much as possible!
Moreover, the roughage provided by hay is beneficial not just for their bellies but also for their teeth. Horses’ teeth grow about 1/8 inch each year, and chewing hay helps wear them down properly. This process not only aids in digestion by breaking food into smaller particles but also stimulates saliva production, which helps coat and moisten their meals. By providing ample roughage, we are ensuring their teeth remain healthy and balanced, which is vital for optimal digestion.
In essence, hay is more than just food for our horses; it’s a fundamental aspect of their overall care, ensuring they remain healthy, happy, and ready to take on the world!
